COLLECTIVE NOUNS

A collective noun is a name given to a group of something and many collective nouns refer to various kinds of animals. Most of you will know, for example, that a group of cows is called a herd, a group of seagulls is called a flock and a group of fish is called a shoal. You may also have heard of some less common ones such as a gaggle of geese, a school of porpoises or a pack of wolves. Here are some really unusual and interesting collective nouns that you may not know.

A tower of giraffes - A parliament of owls
A bloat of hippopotami - A pandemonium of parrots
A leap of leopards - An asylum of cuckoos
A skulk of foxes - A charm of goldfinches
A labour of moles - A hover of trout
A smack of jellyfish - A pride of lions

You may like to invent a few collective nouns of your own. A good way to do this is to think of the characteristic that comes to mind when you imagine a certain creature. For example, you could have a prickle of hedgehogs, a bounce of kangaroos or a stink of skunks! See if you can think of some really unusual or funny ones.
